The Crannog project in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, looks at bringing a vacant building, on the banks of Carlingwark Loch, back into community use through a retrofit of existing fabric and an extension.

Natural materials have been prioritised for the extension with proposals for a glu-lam timber roof structure, thatch roof finish, straw-bale walls and suspended cross laminated timber floor. The retrofit element involves stripping back existing linings and services to expose inherent qualities of the original building fabric before making additions with natural, sustainable materials including timber, fabrics and clay plaster.

The project has been funded with support from Dumfries & Galloway Council funding and we are currently working alongside the client and business planners to secure further funding.
