Ballianlay, Isle of Bute
Ballianlay is the site of an old schoolhouse that has laid derelict for a number of years. Our client bought the building with to transform it into a home. Our designs create a south-facing courtyard between the existing schoolhouse which is being refurbished as bedrooms and utility spaces and the new build element that contains living and kitchen spaces.
The stone and slate of the original building has been repaired and the new element will have roof and walls clad in timber.
The site is to the centre of the Isle of Bute and at the top of a hill overlooking the coast and countryside. The large, carefully positioned windows and roof lights will allow the ever changing light and weather to be experienced while being warm and protected.
The timber frame, cladding and retrofit of existing building mean this house will have a very low embodied and operational carbon footprint upon completion.
